6th Edition Work Bench Part 3. CHAOS and ZOMBIES!

So here is my third installment of the 6th edition work bench.  Since the last one I haven't done any work on my Daemons at all.  Just not inspired.  However Chaos Space Marines have my attention at the moment.  Huge bricks of 3+ save jerks running around the board has me thoroughly excited for the codex.  I have a few lists with 90 or so power armored CSMs slogging across the board, I tried one out the other night and loved it.  However I have a lot of building and painting to do before I get to that point.  More after the break.

I spent a few hours, yes a few, organizing all of my projects and bits bins 3 days ago after the arrival of my 140 Mantic Zombies, Ghouls, and Corporate Marines.  My projects were in dire need of organization.  I now have a bin for Dark Angels, mostly Dark Vengeance minis, which I plan to build, paint, and in all likelihood sell.  A bin with all my preHeresy FW models and the other bits and kits for my upcoming preheresy army project, more on that in a later post.  Finally I also have a bin full of Chaos, pictured below.

Marines, Terminators, Spawn, Bike Lords, Havoks, Plaguebearers, Grots and more...
There is a lot in that box.  Something in excess of 100 models in various states of completion.  Most of the models are built, some are primed, some need major overhauling to be useful in the 6th edition codex.  I decided that since a lot of my army will be Traitor Angels and a Word Bearers off shoot warband that I didn't want to use an actual Typhus model.  Instead I used a plastic Terminator Lord box, a resin Chaos Base, and a giant Tyranid talon to make my own.  Sufficient greenstuff will be used in the next step to make him gross and nurgly.

The big news is my 140 Mantic Zombies, Ghouls, and Corporate Marines!  This is what inspired me to get organized and get working.

Last night I began to build the 140 model zombie horde.  It took me about 2.5 hours to build 30.  I only did 1 torso swap with the Corporation Marines.  The problem is the torso swap is nowhere near as easy as the Mantic website makes it seem.  The Corporation Marines are Resin, and it is a really stiff resin too, so cutting the torsos off with clippers is difficult and creates some very ill fitting joints.  Using a hobby saw would be logical but I am not too keen on creating large amounts of Resin dust in a house with a 2 year old and 11 week old let alone myself and my wife.  So I may do 1 or 2 more torso swaps and that's it.

Luckily the arms and heads are very easy to swap out.  The Corporation Marine arms are all separate and the Zombie and Ghoul arms, being plastic, are very easy to remove cleanly and replace with Marine arms and vice versa.  The heads require a little clipping here and there on either the head or neck areas to get them to fit, but nothing too taxing.  Once I had figured out the easiest combinations to use when it came to heads, arms, and torsos I breezed through the remaining 20 or so models.

The final result of learning, cutting, gluing, and struggling for 2.5 hours is 30 completed zombies out of 140 and a grasp of how to easily, and hopefully quickly, complete the remaining 110 models.

My goal once all these are built is to paint them over a 2 day period.  Since I don't own an airbrush I think colored primers will be a big help.  I plan to do 4 squads and I will delineate the squads using skin tones.  I was inspired by my success with the 1500 point Necron Army in 5 days that I completed so I am hoping to meet with more success!  I will definitely post that up while I am succeeding, or failing, at that monumental task.

  1. All of them built and painted in 2 days?!? Egads, I have half that and don't see getting them done in a MONTH, let alone 2 days.

    1. Well, painted in two days. I will hopefully have them all built after tonight or Wednesday night. Then 2 days to pain at some point over the holidays.
