New Paints up for Advanced Order with GW. Dark Angels are in the Starter Set?
The new Citadel Paint Range is up for preorder on the GW Website. If you want to check it out go here. Just looking through the new range briefly let me say it is a bit overwhelming. The sheer number of Blues in the "layer" category is nearing the ridiculous. From a first glance it looks like a few of my favorite paints may be gone. Necron Abyss, the very dark blue in the Foundation range, seems to be gone. I use this as the base for my GK force swords, and free hand painting that uses Space as a background, so I will either be stocking up or finishing that army and free hand projects soon! On the upside there is finally a good batch of pinks and hopefully some yellows that will provide good coverage. It may sound silly to some of you but the resurgence of Pink and viable Yellows has me hoping that GW will be making Emperors Children and 1k Sons good again!
Anyone notice the guys on the cover of the new paint set? Looks like the rumors about Dark Angels being in the starter set are true, now just to hope the rumors about Chaos being the other side are true as well...

I am ambivalent about the Layers range, but very, very excited about the Base and Shade ranges effectively increasing the number of Foundation and Wash colors. Intrigued by Textures and curious about Lahmian Medium...
ReplyDeleteNaggaroth Night looks equivalent to Necron Abyss. If not, I have a mostly full pot you can have.

ReplyDeleteNot sure how I managed to triple post. Sorry about that.
ReplyDeleteHa! No worries I took care of it. Thanks for the offer, I am holding out hope.
ReplyDeleteThey had said somewhere that they weren't removing any colors, just renaming everything. So you should be safe.
ReplyDeleteI sincerely hope you're right Rkik.
DeleteLong-time lurker, first-time poster! I enjoy your blog sir, keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteWell, it's not quite as simple as a renaming. If they've switched the company that produces them (as I suspect they have) then the new company will be unable to recreate the precise formula of the old paints, and the equivalent new paints will be slightly different... a bit darker or lighter, or with a bluer undertone, and so on. It's kind of like trying to get the exact same color of house paint from different brands or home improvement stores. I'm sure they haven't really eliminated anything, as the dramatic increase in number of pots shows - it's just a matter of whether or not you can get a good match for the old Citadel Color.
Stahly, of Tale of Painters blog, has the new comparison chart up on his site. It's interesting to see GW's own recommendations as far as equivalency goes. As he comments, there's a couple of colors that don't really correspond well to older paints (Caliban Green is recommended for both Dark Angels Green and Orkhide Shade, which are not exactly the same color.) I personally thin Rakarth Flesh is a bit darker and browner than Dheneb Stone, but I guess we'll see soon enough.
Welcome out of the lurking shadows! Thanks, I try to write interesting posts as often as life allows...
DeleteI always found DA Green and Ork Hide Shade to be too close for comfort myself. I really like Dheneb Stone as a color too so I will be sorry to see it go if it does. Actually I was a fan of most of the Foundation Colors!
It doesn't surprise me that they changed manufacturers. They did shut down an entire paint factory in Asia not too long ago.
I have tried some of the new colours today, and my feeling is that Caliban green is closer to Dark Angels green but have the better coverage of the Foundation range. And from the look of it the comparison chart should have been better colour corrected in the printing because many of the printed colours are way of compared to the real colours. So there is still hope.
ReplyDeleteShades are also not the same as Washes was; they are for lack of better words runnier and should not be used liberally on your models as they will obscure details more than the wash did.
And the glaze are great for fixing the colour grading when blending and also change the hue of a colour if you want it warmer or colder. Could have wished for more than four, but as a glaze I guess they will be sufficient for most need.
Texture paints was a bit I most disregarded as nonsense, but actually when I thought about it they make a whole lot of sense. Cannot recall how many times I slapped on a basecoat and started painting before putting any sand or texture on the base, this will help a lot.
All in all it is a waste improvement in both colour range and how they work, but will take some time to get to grips with.
