The Hobby Side: What I've been up to.

I really love the new plastic Daemon Prince models.
Well it has been quite a while since I posted up an article about the "hobby" aspect of 40k.  Mostly I haven't had much to report, my Salamanders are gone and I have been painting Space Wolves for the BAO, Blood Angels to sell, and my Tyranid project has floundered due to a bad, bad codex.  Part of it is the amount of hate I have received in the past for my painting/hobby articles.  My anonymous hater has seemed to disappear as has Christopher so let's see how committed they are to staying gone...  I have been working recently though on some new projects despite my doldrums.  I decided to make a Renegade Space Marine chapter that could be used as both Loyalist and Chaos, I liked the paint scheme so much that I decided to paint my Grey Knights in a similar color scheme, mostly so I could use the Rhinos for all 3 armies!  Let's take a look at what I have in the fire, more after the break.

Firstly I have been building and priming a lot more models than I have actually been painting.  So here is a look at what I have sitting around in the early stages of completion.  Every Grey Knight army needs some Psyfleman Dreads!

I used Venerable Dreads, obviously, and the Auto Cannons from the IG heavy weapons team to convert the TLAC arms.  Grey Knight armies aren't complete without Grey Knights, and since I am building a Draigowing or Terminator Heavy force I need terminators.  Once built I prime them with Army Painter Skeleton Bone.  I also have a few lists that utilize Coteaz and Death Cult Assassins.  I don't like the DCA models GW have so I decided to use Dark Elf Corsairs and 40kify them with some grenades, I know they can't take grenades, and other 40k doodads.

The CSM/SM renegade army, which is as yet unnamed, also uses Army Painter Skeleton Bone as the primer.  I have quite a bit built for this army including a custom Vulkan (I just can't leave him behind!) and a Fine Cast Nurgle Daemon Prince.  That model is amazing, Fine Cast detractors be damned that is my favorite model I have bought so far.  So easy to put together and it looks really sharp compared to the metal one.
I have 10 total, enough for 5 Slaanesh and 5 Khorne mmmmm...

I think I like this Vulkan better than my previous custom Vulkan.

The basic idea is to take a step out of the painting process by using a primer base that doesn't need any further coats.  I paint all the details then wash the entire model, almost, in Devlan Mud.  I say almost because the "power" type weapons get a special treatment.  Then I go back and highlight the armor, pick out the eyes, and do any bare faces.  Here are some interim steps.
And here are some final products.
Metal Draigo

My Renegade Chapter is still, as I mentioned, unnamed.  I was thinking something to do with knowledge so I could put the GK book symbols on the Rhinos and not worry about it, which made me think about a Word Bearer's break away or Word Bearer influenced chapter.  If you have any thoughts on names I would be open to suggestions!  Hope you enjoyed, I will try to provide updates for this project as much as possible, but I make no promises...

  1. Nice paintjobs! So you decided to go with building a Draigowing eh? I never heard your thoughts back on my lists I sent you. Did any of those help influence your decision?

  2. I decided to do Draigowing a while ago, I just am not sold on it's viability. Sorry for the lag responding to the email, I'll send my thoughts today or tomorrow.
