What I like about Wolves

My army of choice has been Salamanders for a few years now.  I started that army before the 5th edition codex had leaked because I loved the color of the army and I wanted to do a bright green army for a change (I had previously done Black Templars, a dark red Chaos army, and a snow camo scheme Tau army, all rather bland actually).

The Avellorn Campaign

We're starting a new campaign out here in the next two weeks, and I'll be posting up detailed reports and updates here as they develop, but for now here's the campaign overview:

 The Avellorn Campaign

The Hive world of Avellorn has stood as an example of the Imperium for centuries. Not the glittering jewel that is Ultramar, but far from the war-torn landscapes of Armageddon, Avellorn has been as good a place as any in the Imperium, and more than most could hope for...

120 Days of Tyranids

This year I decided to do Tyranids as my first new army of the year. I had a reasonably-sized swarm gestating in the bottom of a Land Raider box that I had put together a while back and never gotten around to finishing, so with a new book and a new year it seemed fitting that I brought out the bugs.

Preparing for ‘Ard Boyz – An Organizer’s Perspective

‘Ard Boyz season is upon us, and there’s a lot out there for the players to chew on; strategy, preparation, armylist composition, etc. There’s not as much info for the organizers though, and they’ve got just as much to worry about as the players before and during the event. I’ve run both the preliminary and semifinal rounds of ‘Ard Boyz every year they’ve done it, so I’m acutely aware of what a challenge it can be. With that in mind, here are six quick things I have found to be helpful, and/or learned the hard way, when it comes to organizing your ‘Ard Boyz event.

Preparing for 'Ard Boyz

Preparing for 'Ard Boyz

The Ard Boyz tournament is a 3 round tournament organized by GW to determine who the “best” 40k player is in the United States.  The games are played at the 2500 point level with no “soft scores”, meaning there is no painting, composition, or sportsmanship scores for the events.  The first round takes place at your local store with the top 3 players advancing to the regional round held somewhere near you (hopefully).

Magnetizing Land Raider Doors and Sponsons

Magnetizing Land Raider Doors and Sponsons

Land Raiders are arguably the best vehicles in Warhammer 40,000.  With three basic types loaded out to do different tasks and transport different numbers of troops you can often face quite a dilemma as to which Land Raider variant(s) to take in a list.  Sometimes you may want a mobile bunker with long range firepower for a troops choice, in which case you take the trusted God Hammer with twin linked Las Cannons.  The most common variations are Crusaders and Redeemers.  Luckily with the advent of the new Space Marine Codex GW made a beautiful new kit for the Crusader and gave us the bits to

New Player 101

New Player 101:
What Army should I play?

The reasons people pick up the game of 40k are numerous but inevitably a person who is going to play must buy their first GW miniature or box set.  But many first time players are not sure which faction to play.  Certainly Space Marines are the most numerous and touted as the best place for beginners to start collecting.  This is not necessarily true.  A person must be invested in the idea of their army of choice in order to want to play.

Making a Greenstuff Press-Mold

I love modeling, but I always end up with just enough extra green stuff to… not really be of any use. Eventually it dries and “falls” *cough* to the floor, ending up as vacuum-cleaner fodder. But not any more! Finally those little bits of greenstuff can be put to good use with a push mold!

For the Love of the Game

People buy GW products for a myriad of reasons.  Some buy them to paint, some buy them to kit-bash and convert, some buy them to play, and others buy them to do a combination of all 3.  The reasons a person plays the game can be just as diverse.  People play for fun, to be a part of the stories they read, to compete, to win, to win at all costs (yes that’s different from playing to win), as a social interaction, to make friends and numerous other reasons.

Welcome!

Hello everyone and welcome to Capture and Control!

We’ve got a lot of cool stuff already set to post and more on the way, but I wanted to take a brief moment to introduce the blog and the current writers, and give an idea of what we’re all about.

This blog was designed after a number of conversations about the kind of material that’s out there for Warhammer 40,000. Our goal is to provide as much quality content as possible about the game and the hobby; simply, we want to create a space where there’s something interesting for everyone involved in this game. From the hoariest longbeard to the freshest new recruit, our hope is that when you come to Capture and Control, you’ll find something worthwhile.

The staff:

Disdainful – Dis has a gaming pedigree that is long and detailed. He’s organized events both on a local and regional level, including tournaments, campaigns, and leagues, and spent more time talking about the ‘state of the game’ than is probably healthy. His contribution to C&C will focus on events, results from the local SoCal/Pasadena scene, Battle Reports, and op/ed material, as well as the occasional flurry of painting content.

Overwatch – Overwatch is a tournament regular and long-time veteran. Over the last year he's been busy expanding his massive Salamanders army and testing every conceivable way to burn and smash things with flamers/meltaguns and hammers, respectively. His contribution to C&C will focus on rule/metagame concepts, armylist discussions, tournament reports from a player's point of view, and various hobby material.

Lola - Lola cut her wargaming teeth cutting people's hedz off at Warmachine/Hordes and has only recently begun to delve into the 41st Millenium, where she's been seeking the meanest possible list with which to sate her competitive nature. Her contribution to C&C will focus on hobby material, painting, basing, and mold-making, as well as beginner and "101"-concepts.

And that's it! We hope you'll come back, and that when you do, you'll find something worth reading!

-Dis.
