Making Las-Plas Razorbacks

The Razorback has become a very common site on the battlefields of the 41st millennium since the advent of the 5th edition marine codices.  With a transport capacity and the ability to put out some good support fire they have become a staple of many marine forces (so much so that I wouldn't be surprised if GW nerfs them in 6th ed so we have to buy new models heh...).  The most popular variants are the Twin-Linked Heavy Bolter, because it comes standard at 40 points and is therefore "free", the Twin-Linked Assault Cannon, and the Lascannon Twin-Linked Plasmagun.  Almost all the variants for the turret are readily available; the TLHB and TLLC come with the Razorback kit, and the TLAC can be bits ordered easily from Land Raider Redeemer/Crusader boxes.  The two variants that are not so easily accessible are the Twin-Linked Heavy Flamer (which is sort of pointless on the Razorback) and the ever popular Lascannon and Twin-Linked Plasmagun variant.  Luckily for us this most popular variant can be converted with relative ease.
To begin with there are two very easy ways to do this.  The first is to simply glue two Plasma Guns together and mount them in one of the small copula spots on the front of the tank.  While easy modeling them this way can get you into some trouble at tournaments with WYSIWYG rules since the gun should be attached to the turret for firing purposes etc.  Personally if you choose to do that conversion I have no problem with it, during tournaments however I would insist you measure to fire the Plasma Gun from the Turret but I certainly wouldn't dock you comp scores etc for it.  The second easy conversion is to simply glue, or in my case, magnetize the TLPG into position in the turret next to the Lascannon.  The reason I magnetize mine is because the Las Cannon and TL PG are separate weapon systems and therefore are not destroyed by a single Weapon Destroyed result but two.  Ok, enough talk let's get started.

Here is what you'll need.
1. A Razorback Kit (or at least the turret assembly including Las Cannons)
2. 2 Rare Earth magnets
3. 2 Plasma Guns
4. 1 Auspex (with or with out hand)
5. Glue, Scalpel, Hobby Saw, the usual.
Trim the handles and stocks off the Plasma Guns, or in the case of the non-primed PG trim off the hands (it came from the Space Wolf Pack box).  Then you'll want to cut the hand or handle off the Auspex leaving you with just the "screen."  Next glue the two Plasma Guns together and glue the Auspex screen to the PG that will be furthest from the Las Cannon.

After that you'll assemble the Lascannon Turret just like the instructions in the Razorback kit describes with the exception of not using the right side (right side while looking head on to the turret).  There is a rectangular part of the Lascannon where the other Lascannon is supposed to fit, since we aren't using the other LC this is where you glue the magnet.  The other magnet gets glued onto the inside of the Auspex screen.  Make sure to check the polarity of the magnets before gluing the last one in place, Rare Earth magnets have both polarities so this is very important.

Once you've done these steps you're practically finished.  All that's left is to assemble the remainder of the Razorback.  If you are like me and want to be able to use the tank as a TL Las Cannon variant then one more simple step is necessary.  Take the right side LC and cut out the rectangular socket section, and cut down the round mount on the weapon support part of the turret.  Leave only about 1/3 of the round "nub."
No magnetization is required for the other LC to be taken on and off.  Two reasons for this.
1. It fits on just fine with out it.
2. It is part of the same weapon system and therefore cannot be independently destroyed like the TL PG can.
All in all very easy conversions.  Here are some more pics of the final product.  Hope you find this instructive.

  1. Ok, at first I thought "oh God ANOTHER article from Overwatch" but I read all the way through and you know what? This one was pretty good. I hadn't really thought of magnetizing it so you could still use the other las cannon when you wanted to. Nicely doen sir.

  2. A little late to the party OW. This razorback variation has been out over two years and you are just now figuring out how to convert one?

I do think you're right about one thing. The Razorback will get nurfed next edition. They sold so many that they won't want people re-using them next edition, they'll want them to buy something else. We'll probably see a swing back to non-mech lists with new vehicle rules making them worse so people will have to shelve their armor and buy more infantry. God I hate GW sometimes.

  3. Well Calligula I tend to play my own lists and not bandwagon on the cool new net list. Hence my not making any Las Plas Razorbacks until now. Notice I said "making" not "figuring out how to make" because I have always known how to make one I simply chose not to.

Thanks "Anonymous" I am glad you didn't have reason to further deride my posting articles for my own site. =]

  4. So, the obvious question is, why dont you sell some of these razorback weapon conversions? I would happily pay you to do the converting if I bought all the parts.

  5. Darrian, I would be more than happy to build some for you. Are you going to GE tomorrow night? We can talk about it there otherwise e-mail me or PM me on Dakka and we can work out the details.

  6. Nice conversion. What I did on mine was cut down the plasma guns a bit then remove the lascannon barrel and stick them on.

  7. Thanks Mercer. I had considered that but I also wanted to keep the option of using the Twin-linked Las Cannon and this was the only way I could see doing that. Now that I am done though I will probably never want the TL LC but such is life. Your RB looks really good btw.

  8. Thanks mate. I guess magnets are the way forward if you want twin lascannons in the future, though las/plas is pretty awesome since I've started using them - either better with Angels :)

  11. I am very impressed with this conversion. It would be an easy swap for me as well as I do not glue my turrets into my razorbacks.
I had not considered using rare earth magnets but I can get hold of some as well. Cheers for posting this article Overwatch, your contribution to the wargaming community is appreciated.

  12. A random question I just realized while building mine, is what happens if your opponent says to take the lascannon off?
